Vintage WWII Plane Fleet To Write Messages Of Thanks Over NYC

NEW YORK, NY — A squad of vintage World War II planes will soar across the five boroughs Tuesday morning to thank frontline responders during the coronavirus pandemic.

The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team are set to bring their "Messages of Thanks and Hope" show to Connecticut, Westchester, New York City and Long Island between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The flight squad of six vintage WWII aircraft will fly down the East River before circling Manhattan and heading up the Hudson River, according to a map on the team's Facebook page. The team will then pass over Queens on its way to Long Island.

"These messages of thanks and hope are dedicated to the frontline responders and all those affected by COVID-19," the team writes.

The Skyptypers team advised New Yorkers to watch the show from the "safety of their homes and practice social distancing."

The air show comes after the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Air Force Thunderbirds jets flew in tribute to medical workers on the frontline of the new coronavirus crisis last week.

That show seemed to increase crowding in parks and other public spaces that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn quickens the virus's spread and overwhelm local hospitals.
