NYC Subway Delays: 'Debris On Tracks' Ruins 1, 2, 3, 4 And 5 Service, MTA Says

The MTA made service changes to the 1,2, 3, 4 and 5 trains Thursday morning, shutting down service on most of the west side of Manhattan.

HELL'S KITCHEN, NY — The MTA shut down train subway service on most the Seventh Avenue line Thursday morning due to "debris" on the tracks of a Hell's Kitchen 1 train station.

Due to the debris at 50th Street, 1 train service was suspended between South Ferry and 137th Street, 2 train service was suspended between 149th Street and Times Square and 3 train service was suspended between 148th Street and Times Square, the MTA announced around 8 a.m.

Train service with delays on the 2 and 3 lines was restored shortly before 9:30 a.m., the MTA said.

The MTA is investigating what caused the debris to halt service on the Seventh Avenue line, an MTA spokesman told Patch.

"At this point, we know a third rail protection board and debris were involved but it's not clear what caused the incident.," the MTA spokesman told Patch.

Seventh Avenue line train station were packed Thursday morning as a result of the service changes. Frustrated commuters air their grievances with the MTA on social media.

"Happy Thursday [MTA], I'm never getting to work.," one stuck passenger wrote on Twitter.

Congestion looked particularly bad at the 168th Street station in Washington Heights.

The MTA has made no indication as to what the debris at 50th Street is, or why it's causing such extensive delays. Patch will update this story with more details.

The MTA suggests commuters use the A/B/C/D/N/Q/R and W trains or M7, M10, M11, M20 or M104 buses to travel on the West Side Thursday morning.
