Parenting Then, and Now

Hi readers. I'd like to take you on the journey of my life as both a child on Long Island, and now a mom. Both journeys have had their bumps, but I'm doing the best I can!

When I was growing up in East Meadow in the 70s and 80s with my seven brothers and sisters, there was no place where you could post your opinions or share stories about your life like you can here — and believe me it would have been helpful.

Growing up in my family was no easy task — dad was a cop, mom was home until I hit third grade, then became a nurse almost the same time my father retired, and I mean retired. He became a permanent fixture in the house — on the recliner if I'm being honest — and watched every move we made, at least those of us who didn't get out, and as the youngest it took years to get out.

Still, my parents helped make me the person I am today, and the parent I am today. My own children — now 21, 19, and 14 — have not had it easy either, I know that, but neither have I! Peer pressure is alive and thriving on Long Island, for children and adults! But I've always tried to see the big picture, how my decisions would affect their futures.

Unfortunately, it's often meant not being included in certain things, but there's always a price for principals right? And yes it would have been easier to go along with the (ever increasing) crowd, but I can't do that. I fully intend to leave this world one day knowing I left three people here who would not add to the unkindness and selfishness that seems so prevalent.

For my parents, being "strict" was all about us not getting into trouble, flying under the radar. For me, it's about making the world better, period. So I'll be sharing my stories about life growing up on Long Island, and life now as a mom. I hope you'll stay tuned!
