Did anyone happen to see Joe Nocera’s article on the op-ed page of today’s New York Times? If what he reports is true I find it extremely disheartening to learn that Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, who overcame a personal tragedy in order to become a leading advocate of gun control legislation, has seemingly allowed herself to be sucked in by an opportunistic, dare I say “gunslinging” law firm which has filed a lawsuit of questionable merit on her behalf.
Tort reform, particularly as it applies to class-action lawsuits of the type Nocera describes is one element in the battle to rein in the costs of medical care and health insurance which will bankrupt the country unless contained. Just look at the article on the front page of today’s Times about the costs associated with a few stitches in the emergency room. Something has to change here.
