Do Your Part at the Jones Beach Breast Cancer Walk

There's still plenty of time to sign up and raise money for a worthy cause.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there's plenty you can do to help fight the disease.

According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lives. You can help by raising money for national and local charities that fight the disease.

One of the biggest fundraisers coming up is the Making Strides of Long Island breast cancer walk, which will be taking place at Jones Beach on Oct. 16. Making Strides is part of the American Cancer Society, so you know the money you raise will be going to a good cause.

There's still plenty of time to register for the walk and start raising money. So far, the walk has raised more than $400,000, which will go to helping breast cancer patients and finding a cure for the disease.

Registration on the day of the walk starts at 7 a.m., and the walk itself has a rolling start between 8 and 11 a.m.

The day is more than just a walk: there will be live entertainment and tents with refreshments, merchandise and information for all walkers and people who come to cheer them on.

You don't have to finish the whole walk if you don't feel capable of it. It's not a race, and no one will judge if you bow out before the finish line.

And if you can't walk, you can also volunteer to help out at the event. If you want to sign up to be a volunteer, click here.
