FD Cautions Uses Of Space Heaters In Wake Of Deadly Bronx Fire
Among the tips when planning to plug in a space heater, make sure it directly grounded into the outlet, the Wantagh Fire Department says.
WANTAGH, NY — The apartment fire in the Bronx that killed 17 people, including eight children, was apparently caused by a malfunctioning space heater. Another factor in the tragedy, self-closing doors did not close, FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.
The Wantagh Fire Department is thinking of the victims of the high-rise inferno and taking this time to remind residents how to stay safe in a fire.
When it comes to space heaters, purchase ones that underwent rigorous testing in an independent laboratory. They should have an automatic shut-off if the device is knocked over, the fire department said on Facebook.

Heaters should be plugged directly into a grounded outlet and never with an extension cord or power strip.
The department also cautions, before using a portable heating device to make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

Flames can spread extremely fast as witnessed in the Bronx on Sunday.
"Try to remember to close the door to the room where the fire is located and the exterior door to the home," Kevin Regan, a spokesperson for the Wantagh Fire Department, said. "This may help to contain the fire to that room and prevent further spread by cutting off a continued flow of fresh air which will help the flames intensify and spread."
Dozens of people were hospitalized, several are in critical condition. It was the worst New York City fire in more than three decades.
