Hempstead Town Animal Shelter Holding Special Adoption Day
"Don't Bully My Breed" will educate people about pit bulls, and all adoption fees will be waived.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino is inviting all residents to attend the Animal Shelter’s biggest event of the year, “Don’t Bully My Breed,” on Saturday, May 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the shelter. This program is dedicated to educating the public on common misconceptions about pit bulls, which comprise a majority of the dogs at the shelter, and all adoption fees will be waived to help these loving canines find their forever homes. Best of all, all proceeds from this event will benefit the Tails of Hope Fund, which provides funding for emergency medical care and additional training for shelter animals.
“Don’t Bully My Breed” will feature adoptable pit bulls, guest speakers, music, raffles, a kids’ activity table, an opportunity to win a custom pet playhouse and even take hockey shots with former NHL goaltender Gilles Villemure.
“The Town of Hempstead is committed to finding permanent homes for pit bulls and all other dogs and cats at our animal shelter,” Santino said. “We encourage all residents to attend ‘Don’t Bully My Breed’ on May 6 to meet our shelter animals and learn more about the pit bull breed. Of course, with all fees waived on this date, there’s no better time to adopt!”

At the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter and on its Facebook page, staffers regularly provide specific details about an individual dog’s personality and behavior, and work with prospective adopters to pair them with the dog that best suits their family’s lifestyle. Shelter staff and volunteers will be on hand during this event to help residents meet and greet adoptable dogs.
