Highlights From Jan. 17 Wantagh Board of Education Meeting

A recap of items addressed at Thursday night's meeting submitted by school district.

Highlights from the Wantagh Board of Education meeting held Jan 17.

• The board of education was pleased to have members from Cub Scout Pack 191 of Wantagh’s Christ Lutheran Church begin the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.
• The board of education received a letter of resignation for retirement purposes from Forest Lake Elementary School Physical Education teacher, Wendy Sclafani. Acting Superintendent Maureen Goldberg thanked her for 19 years of dedicated service to the education of our children and for fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and the health and well-being of our students.
• The board of education received a letter of resignation for retirement purposes from Veronica Hurley, Principal Clerk and Treasurer of the Wantagh School District. Hurley began working for the school district in 1982. Board President Michael Cucci and Assistant Superintendent of Business, Dana DiCapua thanked her for many years of dedicated and loyal service to the benefit of our children and the Wantagh School District and wished her health and happiness in her retirement.
• Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Maureen Appiarius introduced newly appointed Family and Consumer Science teacher Jamie Laudage, who thanked the school board and stated she was excited to be working for the Wantagh School District..
• Dr. Appiarius also introduced Joseph Guglielmo, who has quickly and deftly stepped into the Wantagh High School guidance counselor position as a leave replacement for guidance counselor Prestianni.
• Cucci thanked NEFCU for their generous donation from the NEFCU Teacher Grant Committee.

After the board members concluded with the business of the agenda, the following issues were addressed:
• Cucci read a statement acknowledging that the board of education along with their attorneys and former Superintendent D’Angelo and his attorneys have been working together to sever contractual obligations and they hope to have a resolution soon.
