ICYMI: Newborn Baby Left at Local Fire Department Thanksgiving Morning

Police and firefighters cared for the child, which was only three hours old.

A newborn baby was left at the Wantagh Fire Department headquarters on Thanksgiving morning.

According to police, officers and a Nassau County Police medic responded to the Wantagh firehouse located at 3470 Park Ave. at 11:46 a.m. to assist with the drop off of a baby to the AMT Children of Hope Baby Safe Haven. The fire house is a dedicated Safe Haven drop off location.

Upon their arrival a baby girl, approximately 3 hours old, weighing 4 pounds, 2 ounces, with its umbilical cord still attached, was received by the Wantagh Fire Department and the police medic at the scene. They conducted a wellness check on the child before transporting in a fire department ambulance to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The child is the 3,299 child the AMT Children of Hope Baby Safe Haven Foundation has received nationally since its inception in 1998 and 15th child this year in New York State. The foundation can be contacted at 1-877-796-HOPE (4673).
