Lawmaker Secures Funding For Kids Impacted By Gun Violence

The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund was created for the Long Islander who died saving students in the Stoneman Douglas High School massacre.

SEAFORD, NY — State Senator John Brooks (D-Seaford) delivered a $50,000 funding award in memory of Scott Beigel, one of the victims of the Parkland, Florida school shooting.

Beigel was a native Long Islander.

His parents Linda Beigel Schulman and Mike Schulman received the symbolic check from Brooks for their support of gun violence intervention programs.

Scott Beigel was a geography teacher who was killed while protecting his students.

The Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund was established by his parents to send at-risk children who were affected by gun violence to a sleep-away camp every summer.

"What began as an unimaginable tragedy — one no parent should ever have to endure — has turned into a beacon of hope," Brooks said in a statement. "That is why I am so proud to have obtained funding so the Schulmans can continue carrying on this important work of helping to better the lives of New York’s children."
