Missing Conn. Man With Dementia Caused Wrong-Way Crash On LI: PD

An elderly man who was reported missing in Connecticut caused a wrong-way crash on the Wantagh State Parkway Tuesday night, New York State Police say, seriously injuring himself and also injuring three others.

According to police, Burgess E. Moore, 82, of New Britain, Conn., suffers from dementia and was reported missing to the New Britain Police Department. He was driving a 2012 Subaru Legacy north in the southbound lanes of the Wantagh State Parkway at 10:22 p.m. on Tuesday when he got into a head-on collision with a 2007 Toyota Rav4 being driven by Richard Hurwitz, 48, of Long Beach.

Police say a third car, being driven by Vincent Diaz, 20, of Levittown, was unable to stop and crashed into the back of Hurwitz's car.

The crash shutdown the Wantagh State Parkway for hours Tuesday night. Moore suffered severe facial injuries and a broken hip. He was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition. Hurwitz, Diaz and his passenger, 21-year-old Dennis Riley, also of Levittown, were also taken to NUMC for treatment of minor injuries.
