New York American Water Awards General Douglas MacArthur High School Student Prestigious Scholarship
Kate Baumstein Receives $3,000 Scholarship to Pursue a Career in Computer Science

New York American Water—through its partnership with the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC-NY)—recently awarded Kate Baumstein of Wantagh a $3,000 scholarship. The scholarship is intended to help fund Kate’s education at Binghamton University, which starts this fall. This is the seventh consecutive year New York American Water has offered scholarships to high school students within its service area as part of its commitment to fostering the future workforce and leaders of the State’s water supply.
“We congratulate Kate on her achievements as a high school student and wish her nothing but success as she pursues the next chapter of her education focused in the science, technology and engineering fields,” said Carmen Tierno, President of New York American Water. “We look forward to witnessing her success and the great things she will accomplish in the future.”
Kate, who is currently a senior at General Douglas MacArthur High School, is one of five scholarship recipients throughout the New York American Water service territory. The students received their awards at a ceremony held during the NAWC-NY Regional Conference at The United States Military Academy at West Point.

While attending General Douglas MacArthur High School, Kate maintained a Grade Point Average of 102.3 while participating in a variety of extra-curricular activities including varsity soccer and track team captain, which she is an all-conference and all-division athlete. In addition to being an AP scholar, Kate received Senator Kemp Hannon’s Youth Leadership Award and the merit award at L.I. Science Congress. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, World Language Honor Society and the Science Research Society. Last but not least, Kate is a volunteer for the Autism Life Skills Program and a participant in the Nassau County Math Tournament.
