New York American Water Awards Island Trees High School Student Prestigious Scholarship
Michael Verdi Receives $3,000 Scholarship to Pursue a Career in Engineering

New York American Water—through its partnership with the New York Chapter of the National Association of Water Companies (NAWC-NY)—recently awarded Michael Verdi of Seaford a $3,000 scholarship The scholarship is intended to help fund Michael’s education at Buffalo University, which starts this fall. This is the seventh consecutive year New York American Water has offered scholarships to high school students within its service area as part of its commitment to fostering the future workforce and leaders of the State’s water supply.
“We congratulate Michael on his achievements as a high school student and wish him nothing but success as he pursues the next chapter of his education focused in the science, technology and engineering fields,” said Carmen Tierno, President of New York American Water. “We look forward to witnessing his success and the great things he will accomplish in the future.”
Michael, who is currently a senior at Island Trees High School in Levittown, is one of five scholarship recipients throughout the New York American Water service territory. The students received their awards at a ceremony held during the NAWC-NY Regional Conference at The United States Military Academy at West Point.

While attending Island Trees High School, Michael maintained a Grade Point Average of 103.65 while being the captain of the varsity soccer team and a member of the varsity basketball team. In addition, Michael is a member of the Key Club, National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and received the Scholars Athlete award for soccer. He is also a four year member of the school’s band and marching band. In his free time, Michael volunteers and a local nursing home and coaches youth basketball at the Island Trees Basketball Camp.
