Seaford Boys Lacrosse Has High Hopes For Deep Run In 2011

With 18 seniors, expectations are sky-high for the Vikings.

After finishing just over .500 last year and then getting blown out by eventual state champion Manhasset in the Class C semifinals, the boys lacrosse team is primed and ready for a deeper run in 2011.

With 18 returning seniors, and Manhasset moving up from to Class B, the Vikings believe they have the experience and the talent to make a run deep in the playoffs in May.

“They’re going to bring us leadership and hard work,” said Seaford head coach Mike Corcoran of his senior-laden roster.  Their experience is going to help us.  I hope to have 18 captains on the roster.”

With powerhouse Manhasset out of the conference, the Vikings have a clear path back to the playoffs, and have the ability to make it all the way to the county finals, if not further. Standing in their way will be rivals Friends Academy and Cold Spring Harbor.

“With Manhasset gone [to the B conference], our goal is to be playing for the county championship,” said Corcoran. “We’re stronger offensively, and I truly believe that we can achieve that goal.”

For the Vikings to live up to their expectations, they are going to need their seniors to play up to their capability.  Up top, they will need Anthony Marino – who scored five goals in their first scrimmage – and Tommy Curran to put the ball in the cage.  In the midfield, Dan Arena and Kevin Glazer are expected to run things, and in the back, Greg Kolodinsky, Nick Pasco and Jared Saperstein are going to protect the net.

“We’re going to be real good in transition, especially with that defense we’ve got,” said Corcoran. “We should dominate faceoffs with Arena and Justin Buckley, so we’ll control the ball and work from there.”

With their game plan in place, strong senior leadership, and an impressive freshman class that features Andrew Sappia in net, who notched his first win last week in a 13-9 Viking victory at Calhoun, the sky is the limit for this Vikings team.

“We’re going to be great on face-offs, and our offense is definitely better this year than the team we took to the playoffs last year,” he said. “We have 18 seniors, and when you get that many, you expect great things. We’ve been to the semifinals at Hofstra the last three years, so this year is our time to break out.”

After a Monday aternoon home game against Mepham, Seaford will next be in action on Wednesday at Baldwin for a 4:45 p.m. faceoff. Seaford's first Class C game is scheduled for April 8 aganst North Shore starting at 7 p.m.
