Seaford Football Gunning For Another Title

Defending Long Island champions carry 33-game conference winning streak into 2010 season.

The Seaford High School football program enters the 2010 season riding a 33-game conference-winning streak and longtime head coach Rob Perpall sees no reason why the perfection cannot continue.

Despite losing six All-County players from last year's Long Island championship team, the Vikings are the clear favorites in Conference IV. "If we play up to our potential we will win every game," said Coach Perpall of the feeling his team has the ability to notch another undefeated season. "Realistically we can win every game, but it is not going to be easy."

If the Vikings are to repeat as Long Island Conference IV champions it will need to do so with a brand new quarterback, after losing Rob Anderson to graduation. The new signal caller of Seaford's Power I offense will be senior Joe Kirinic, who will rely on experienced running backs Justin Buckley and John Troisi to control procession on the ground and be key receiving weapons out of the backfield. Anchoring the offensive line will be senior captain Bill Pavinas.

"We like smash mouth football," said Perpall of his offensive philosophy.

On the defensive side the Vikings run an aggressive 3-5 defense designed to force turnovers. Key members of the Vikings defense include senior outside linebackers Mike Lasher and Ryan Metas along with safety Eddie Schaller.

"We are constantly stunting from different angles," said Perpall of the style of defense Seaford plays. "We are very aggressive."

Perpall attributes much of the Viking's recent success of his program to a vibrant youth football organization in Seaford called the Long Island Broncos. One product from the Broncos Perpall expects to make an immediate impact as a freshman is tight end John O'Hagen, who at only 13-years old stands at 6'1 225 pounds.

Seaford is seeded first in Conference IV followed by Roosevelt, East Rockaway and Locust Valley.  Seaford will face Locust Valley and East Rockaway back-to-back weeks on Sept. 16 and Sept. 25 and host Roosevelt on Oct. 22 in a game that could decide the Conference IV regular season title. Seaford opens the season with a Friday night game against Island Trees on Sept. 10 starting at 7 p.m.
