Seaford Football Rolls Over Island Trees in Opener

Defending Long Island champions pick up right where they left off last year with 40-14 win to begin 2010 season.

The Seaford High School football team began the 2010 season right where it left off in 2009. The defending Long Island Conference IV champions built up a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and rolled to a 40-14 home triumph over Island Trees before a packed standing-room only crowd at Seaford High School.

"I'm always pleased when we can get a bunch of 15 and 16 year olds to put together a good effort and win because it isn't easy," said Seaford football head coach Rob Perpall's moments after his team's season opening win where the Vikings had 387 yards of total offense.

Much like during most games in last year's undefeated season, Coach Perpall was able to play much of the second half with reserves after building up a large first half lead. The Vikings led 34-14 at halftime and its lead was never jeopardy throughout the game, allowing Perpall to give playing time to many younger players for much of the second half.

"We like everyone to play and we don't want to embarrass the other team," said Coach Perpall of his decision to take out many of his starters early in the third quarter. "A lot of teams do like to embarrass teams... but we won't do it."

A major reason Seaford's 33-game winning streak against Nassau County opponents was never in jeopardy was the play of senior running back Justin Buckley, who rushed for 199 yards and four touchdowns on 20 carries. Senior wide receiver /defensive back Dan Arena reached the end zone twice, first on defense with a 53-yard interception early in the first quarter for Seaford's first points, and later on a 48-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Joe Kirinic.
