Seaford Girls Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Mineola

Vikings fall to Mustangs 37-36 at home.

The girls basketball team put up a valiant effort against Mineola Friday night in its Conference A-IV opener before falling 37-36 in double overtime during  what was a gut-wrenching game. Seaford, which forced overtime on a buzzer beater from Stephanie Meyer at the end of regulation, is now 2-4 overall for the season while Mineola improves to 7-1.

Heroes: While there was no particular star during this match, a few of Seaford’s seniors blazed the trail to show Mineola just what makes them a tough team to beat. “All the players have really earned their stripes, from the two freshman on the team to all the seniors,” said Seaford head coach Bob Vachris. Seaford’s Victoria Wink and Catherine Grebosz led the team’s defensive efforts, to keep this match a low scoring game. Grebosz led the team with an astonishing 14 rebounds while Wink picked up many key steals.

Turning Point: Meyer took the game into overtime with a buzzer beater shot at the end of regulation to knot the score at 32-32. “We had possession at the end of regulation time, and Meyer made sure to tie up the score,” said Coach Vachris. By the end of the first overtime, neither team was able to gain a lead and the match went into double overtime. Meyer tied the game at 36-36 with another key shot but a late free throw from Mineola gave the Mustangs the victory. Meyer had a chance to win it for Seaford at the end of the second overtime but was not able to land a three-pointer from the corner.

The Quote: “The girls really played with all their heart,” said Coach Vachris. “I’m proud of them – they lasted through a long game and were able to really bring it home – or at least try to. Next time, we’re really going to give Mineola a run for their money – and win.”

Bottom Line: Seaford will continue to work its strong defensive plays, in efforts to gain victory during future games. The Lady Vikings return to Conference A-IV action on Tuesday night at home against Clarke starting at 7 p.m.
