Seaford Girls Basketball Victorious in First Round Playoff Action

Lady Vikings defeat Floral Park 51-43 to advance to quarterfinals.

Coming off of a historic regular season that saw the Seaford girls basketball team captured its first ever conference championship, the Lady Vikings continued the magical run Friday night with a 51-43 home first round playoff victory over Floral Park. Seventh-seeded Seaford, which finished 8-2 in Conference A-IV and 11-6 overall, trailed 13-7 after one quarter and 20-17 at halftime but took control of the game with a 13-6 third quarter run. Floral Park had won a county title three of the last four years.

Hero- Meghan Curly led the way for the Lady Vikings by playing a tough game on both ends of the floor. Curley contested every shot, ran the fast break, and sank crucial field goals when the game was getting close. She finished the game with a double double, racking up 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also had two blocks and two steals. Teammates Stephanie Meyer and Nicole Nutty also had terrific games for the Lady Vikings as they helped run this fast paced offense. The duo recorded 11 points a piece. They also combined to record 5 steals. Valerie Fox of Floral Park led her team in scoring with 11 points in a tough defeat.

Turning Point- The game was a back and forth battle most of the way. Both teams were playing some of their best basketball all season and neither team was going to quit. The Lady Vikings built a nice third quarter lead, but Fox of Floral Park kept her team in it by driving to the lane and keeping her teammates involved. However, late in the fourth quarter the Lady Vikings buckled down and got the job done. They played tough defense and forced the Knights to turn the ball over on three consecutive possessions. Seaford capitalized and went on a 9-0 run to give them the lead that would carry them for the remainder of the game.

Quote- Seaford head coach Bob Vachris said after the game, “This is our first tournament win and first conference championship in school history, so we are very proud of that. It’s great that the parents realized we have something good going on here. Floral Park was a very tough opponent. That program has won the county championship three out of the last five. Now we can compete with a program like that. Hopefully the parents can see the progress we have made.”

Bottom Line- With this historic playoff win Seaford's magical season continues with the Lady Vikings advancing to face second-seeded Garden City in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
