Several Cats Die In Wantagh House Fire

No firefighters were injured battling the blaze, but several cats were killed by the heat and smoke.

The Wantagh Fire Department responded to a call on Seaman's Neck Road early Wednesday morning. While no people were hurt during the fire, several pets died as a result of the heat and smoke.

The call came in at about 4:20 a.m. for a home located at 1080 Seaman's Neck Road. When the first chiefs arrived on the scene, they saw fire coming out of two sides and the roof of the house. According to Kevin Regan, the Wantagh Fire Department's public information officer, the homeowner was already out of the house and told Second Assistant Chief Ken Kelly, "I'm trying to get her out." This led the cheif and ex-captain Rick Sculco, Jr. to believe that there was still someone trapped inside. The two began an immediate search of the inside of the house.

Fire fighters from Seaford, East Meadow, Levittown and Massapequa also responded. As firefighters began to get the fire under control, it was learned that the person the homeowner was looking for was actually a cat. It took the fire departments about 35 minutes to get the fire under control.
