WANTAGH, NY — Another round of shark sightings on Wednesday led to swimming being suspended at Jones Beach and at Robert Moses State Park.

George Gorman, the Long Island regional director for the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, said swimming remained off-limits as the sharks were near the shore and they would reevaluate on Thursday at both locations.

Sharks were spotted before lifeguards were on duty, Gorman said.

Town of Hempstead beaches allowed people to enjoy the water Wednesday, but only "knee-deep" as a precaution, a spokesperson for the town said. Lifeguards will reassess the situation on Thursday.

However, in Long Beach, swimming was permitted, lifeguards saw a shark early, but "it did not affect beach hours," a spokesperson said.
