Speed Cameras Activated in Nassau County School Zones
Nassau County speed camera locations released as program kicks off.

Speed cameras were officially activated this week in school zones across Nassau County as students returned to the classroom.
Six cameras were activated Tuesday and 13 activated Wednesday in school districts, according to Nassau County officials. Six others are scheduled to go into effect sometime next week.
Several units malfunctioned and began spouting speeding tickets before the official activation date, causing Nassau County to throw out more than $2 million in traffic tickets over the summer.

“I don’t have a high confidence level that the cameras were operating at statutory levels,” County Executive Ed Mangano said after the incident, according to Newsday. “So we are declaring amnesty with all tickets issued this summer.” Read the full story here.
The camera installation outraged countless families and residents who frequent the areas.

A Facebook group, NS School Traffic Camera Error Page, was created Friday for residents to share their run ins with the cameras.
“Users of Glen Cove Avenue in Glen Head - the new Nassau County traffic initiative has begun with a camera at the entrance of the HS/MS. Some communities are reporting serious errors in ticketing. Let’s be sure, at the very least, we aren’t getting ticketed when we shouldn’t be,” wrote the group.
