Top opinion pieces by Patch users this week.

Every day on Patch, locals share their opinions on a variety of subjects.

Here are some of the most interesting blogs from the past week:

  • WSHA Neighborhood Watch: Halloween Safety Tips: Autumn is in the air and Halloween is right around the corner. Many of our little ones are getting anxious as it draws closer. Halloween is a fun time of year for our children and its easy during the excitement for us to let our guard down.
  • A Reenactor Looks at Halloween Costumes: About five years ago I found an amazing pirate coat at one of the Halloween stores that grow like pumpkins in a patch in late September.  The cut and look of the fabric made it authentic looking, and at $45 it was a steal.
  • Sad Columbus Day!: As a child, I was told that today is the day we celebrate the man who discovered America. For years, I accepted this holiday as I did with all other holidays.  I didn’t think about whether it made sense or not. I just knew that we didn’t have to go to school on Columbus Day because we were celebrating the discovery of America.
  • Kids Today: The other day I decided to count how many times I heard the dreaded phrase, “kids today” in conversations. My day began at the supermarket where I heard it as two younger moms passed.
  • Harvard Study: Bacon May Increase Infertility Dramatically in Men: A Harvard School of Public Health study found that men who “eat lots processed meat such as bacon and sausage” have 30% fewer normal sperm than men who didn’t.
  • October: Once more October has returned, and unleashed the strings of my heart. With it's effortless grace and gossamer wings, it has always been the most favorite of my days.
  • Eggs-actly!: Do you love eggs? I do. But for years I avoided them because they were thought to contain dangerous levels of cholesterol that could lead to heart disease. It turns out there were some misconceptions about the way our bodies handle the cholesterol in this protein packed little capsule.
  • Killian's Hotel: The historical importance of Killian’s Hotel lies in the fact that it represents what the Massapequa area was like for many years, namely a place where people came to rest and relax. It was one of at least fourteen hotels that dotted the landscape throughout the nineteenth century.
  • Yoga and Candles: My yoga class (and an early morning phone call) caused me not only to blog late, but preempted my original writing material; my Paris trip. I have not gone to a yoga class since mid August when I ripped two muscles in my left (dominant) arm during my second anti-gravity class.
  • Third Quarter Stock Market Review: As we entered the Bull Market that had dazzled the financial world for the first half of 2013, we began to see signs of upcoming volatility in the third quarter. The Federal Reserve’s stimulus policies were the focal point as economic data came in, coupled with geopolitical news from Syria in particular.
  • When Technology Came to Town: Remember the contents of the first e-mail you ever sent? I do. It was in January of 2001 - the dawn of a new century being an irony not lost on me - and, in Old English Gothic font, it read "Greetings and felicitations! Hip, Hip, Hip Hurrah!...Tally Ho!" - a Star Trek reference to a fellow fan.
  • Conditioning for Wrestlers: Are you getting ready for the Winter wrestling season? Chances are you are getting into shape to get better.  Here are a few secrets of the pros.
