Town Of Hempstead Snow Crews Expected To Work Through The Night

Plowing was difficult for the Town of Hempstead's Highway Department as high winds dumped snow back on streets shortly after removal.

SEAFORD, NY — Highway crews ran into trouble Monday as the snow they removed gathered again quickly in parts of the Town of Hempstead, said Councilman Christopher Carini.

“A lot of the snow is being pushed back in to the street,” said Carini, noting that in some spots across the town, snow was gathering within a half hour where it was previously removed, making for a messier and less effective cleanup. He said that officials expect the wind “to die down within two hours” and that will make it easier on the crews.

The Civil Service Employee’s Association Local 880 will be working “around the clock” to the get the roadways cleared, Carini said.

Another point of concern for town officials is that the National Weather Service issued a coastal flooding advisory, which is in effect from 8:30 p.m. to 3 a.m., and high tide will be rolling in on shore at about 10:30 p.m. on the heels of the storm, Carini said.

His council district, which covers much of the south shore from Lido Beach to Merrick, is already vulnerable to flooding after the damage left by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Many of the town’s road-raising projects will take place in the district over the next year, he said.

In the meantime, Carini said town officials are closely monitoring for the possibility of flooding.

“We are definitely cautious. We will prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” he said.
