Wantagh Baseball Wins Series Against New Hyde Park

Warriors take first games before falling Thursday on road.

The baseball team fell at New Hyde Park Thursday 18-8 but still had a successful week by taking two of three games from the Gladiators.

Wantagh is now 9-4 in Conference A-1 and 11-4 overall.  The loss to New Hyde Park Thursday will however make it more difficult for Wantagh to capture the Conference A-1 regular season title as Garden City sits atop the league standings at 12-2.

Hero- Nick Frendo had a solid game for Wantagh Thursday with two home runs.. New Hyde Park accomplished a rare feat on the day with four of their players registering three hits including J.T. O’Callahan, Anthony Simone, Kevin Towey and Joe Carbone. Simone nearly pitched a complete game on the mound going for 6 1/3 innings.

Turning Point- The score was 5-4 New Hyde Park heading into the bottom of the second when Wantagh made a pitching change and New Hyde Park capitalized. They drew walks and found ways to get on base. Combining patience with crucial timing they built a very comfortable lead. New Hyde Park continued the hot streak on their way to a win by a score of 18-8.

The Quote-  Wantagh assistant coach Mike Nino said after the game, “[New Hyde Park] played great today. They played great from the beginning. It was all on them today. They capitalized when they needed to. We are going to have to sweep Garden City in order to pull out the conference.”

Bottom Line- Although Wantagh clinched second place in their conference, first place is going to be hard to achieve. The Warriors will need to sweep Garden City next week to win the regular season  conference title. The three-game series against Garden City begins on Tuesday at Wantagh.
