Wantagh Boys Basketball Ends Season On Winning Note

Warriors defeat Garden City to close year on three-game winning streak.

The boys basketball team won their last game of the season Monday night at home against Garden City 59-49 to end the season on a three-game winning streak. The loss knocked Garden City out of playoff contention with the Trojans finishing the season 5-7. Wantagh finished the season 4-8 in Conference A-1 and 7-9 overall.

Hero- Wantagh's Mike Tomeo scored 21 points on the night lighting it up from outside the arch all night long. Along with teammate John Reicherter, who had 10 points, the Wantagh offense was scorching on Monday night.

Turning Point- With the score close and the outcome of the game still unclear, the Warriors put on their battle gear and came out hard in the third quarter. The Warriors drained five consecutive three pointers on their way to a 15-5 run which put them 10 points ahead of the Trojans heading into the fourth quarter. The Trojans, as they have all year, fought back with everything they had but Wantagh would not relinquish their lead.

The Quote-Wantagh head coach Keith Hunter said after the win, “It’s nice we get to go out on a positive note. They came out fired up and believe me it’s not hard to get them worked up. They came out and knew what they had to do. They held their own against a good team. It’s great to end the season winning three consecutive games. I’m very proud of my guys.”

Garden City head coach Larry Steimer said, “Unfortunately we didn’t get the outcome we wanted. They are a good outside scoring team and they played well today. We will take some time and get ready for next season.”

Bottom Line- This was a game that featured two very good teams. Wantagh’s record is not indicative of their performance this year and they are an extremely hard team to beat. They were able to get the three pointers going and that led them to victory. The Trojans had high hopes of making the playoffs this year, but the second half of the season didn’t pan out exactly how they wanted it to. They featured a solid core of players between James Cauchi, Colamussi and Eilbeck, but unfortunately they couldn’t get the outcome they wanted. However, nothing should be taken away from the hard work and effort put into every game and every play this season. The Trojans took a leap in a good direction for their basketball program and deserve credit for putting together a very impressive season. The same could be said for Wantagh who lost 5 games by a very small margin. Perhaps next season will pan out more favorably for both teams.
