Wantagh Boys Basketball Falls to Jericho
Warriors drop 55-38 Conference A-1 matchup to Jayhawks.
The boys basketball team fell to Jericho at home Thursday night 55-38. The loss drops the Warriors (2-4 overall) to 0-2 in Conference A-1. With the win Jericho (5-4 overall) moves into second place ahead of Westbury with a conference record of 3-1.
Hero- Justice Perez of Wantagh scored 10 points for the day. He also recorded six rebounds and proved to be a solid swingman for the Warriors. He drove to the paint and wasn’t scared to put the ball on the floor to get to the line. Jordan Kanzer of Jericho had a great day from behind the the three point arc, compiling 18 points for the night.
Turning Point- The first quarter showcased the tough defense of both squads with Jericho leading 12-7. However in the second quarter Kanzer caught fire behind the arc and connected on three straight three pointers. He also added a last minute buzzer beater before the half to give him four three pointers for the half and Jericho a 31-15 lead heading to the locker room. The Jericho run in the second quarter was too much for Wantagh to make up.
Quote- Wantagh head coach Keith Hunter said, “If we hit some free throws at the beginning it would have been a much closer game. If we did that we wouldn’t have had to put so much pressure on [ourselves]. Jericho has some good shooters. Kanzer really caught fire and that gave Jericho a good lead. It’s tough to start out how we have, but as any coach would agree, anyone could win any game. I think we will go on a good run. We’ll just have to see.”
Bottom Line- Wantagh continues to be the bearer of unfortunate games. One or two streaks have seemed to have decided the outcome of most of their games. As Coach Hunter said, any game is winnable, and the Warriors will continue to play hard each contest
Who's Next?- Wantagh will look to rebound against New Hyde Park on Jan. 11 at home starting at 6:15 p.m.
