Wantagh Community Rallies For Fire Fighter Who Lost Home

Scott Craft lost everything he had from his deceased brother. Now, his community is helping him rebuild. Find out how you can help.

The communities of Wantagh and Seaford are rallying behind a lifelong resident who lost everything in a house fire early Sunday morning.

Around 3 a.m. Sunday morning, the home of Scott Craft, located on Island Channel Road in Seaford, caught fire. No one was home at the time, and brave neighbors were able to rescue Craft's dog, Buddy, from the house before the flames became too intense.

Fire fighters from the Wantagh Fire Department responded and had the blaze under control with an hour. The Nassau County Fire Marshal investigated and determined the cause to be a space heater in the boiler room of the home. The fire was deemed non-suspicious.

Craft has been a resident of the area his entire life, and has volunteered with the WFD for more than 30 years, even serving as chief. He told people that he wasn't sad about losing his home and possession, but all the sentimental items he had from his brother, Craig, who passed away suddenly last year.

To help Craft get back on his feet, the community has started an online campaign to raise money on his behalf. In addition, The Harbor House WFD station, located at 2529 Neptune Ave., is hosting a cocktail party fundraiser on April 7. Admission is a minimum donation of $25. Donations can also be made at the Harbor House website.
