Wantagh Girls Basketball Defeats Jericho
Lady Warriors post home victory over Jayhawks 44-21 Thursday evening.
The girls basketball began the new year on a positive note with a 44-21 home victory over Jericho Thursday evening. The victory over the Jayhawks keeps the Lady Warriors (6-2 overall) undefeated in Conference A-1 play at 3-0. .
Heroes- Wantagh was led in scoring by guard Tara Basile, who poured in 13 points and continually pushed the ball up court to help the Warriors establish a comfortable lead. Her teammate Demi Valenti was also a major offensive threat with 10 points. Alexandra Parlato contributed heavily on the boards pulling in nine rebounds.
Turning Point- Wantagh built a halftime lead of 24-11 and then continued its solid defensive play in the second half, holding the Jayhawks to just 10 points. The Warriors remained hot from the field in the second half and put in another 20 points to give themselves a 44-21 victory.
The Quote- Wantagh head coach Stan Bujacich said after the win, “We were trying to get back into the flow of things. We were off for a week with the holidays and we just wanted to get back to our game. I thought we played well.”
Bottom Line- Wantagh dominated Jericho with an up-tempo offense and gritty defense. All the girls hustled all game diving for the ball and battling for rebounds under the basket. Jericho featured their own up-tempo offense, but Wantagh remained true to their good defensive skills and prevented the Jayhawks from going on a run.
Who's Next- Wantagh will next be in action at New Hyde Park on Jan. 11 for another Conference A-1 tilt. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
