Wantagh Girls Basketball Drops Defensive Struggle To Garden City
Lady Trojans outlast Warriors 36-27 Tuesday night.
The girls basketball faced a tough Garden City team at home on Tuesday night in a key Conference A-1 showdown. The Lady Warriors scratched and fought limiting the Trojans (9-2, 5-1) to a season low 36 points. But it was not enough as the Warriors (7-4, 4-2) could not get their offense going and fell by a final score of 36-27.
Heroes: Tara Basile, April Iannetta and Brenna Smith each had six points to lead the Lady Warriors. Basile also hit a three point shot late in the second half.
Turning Point: Garden City started off the second half scoring five straight points to take a 24-14 lead. Things were looking dire for the Lady Warriors until Basile, Iannetta and Smith began to get hot from the field. The trio was able to help Wantagh cut the lead to five at 26-21. Unfortunately for Wantagh Garden City upped the tempo on their defense and limited the Lady Warriors to only six more points in the game.

Quotable: "We were not hitting our shots against them consistently enough," said Wantagh girls basketball head coach Stan Bujacich. "We should have done more with their two three zone defense."
Bottom Line: Wantagh did a good job of containing Garden City's three-point specialist, Kim Ryan limiting her to only two points. They could not stop forward Barbara Sullivan however as the senior forward had 25 points to lead all scorers. Sullivan repeatedly drove on the Warrior defenders getting to the basket for a lay-up or drawing the foul.
