Wantagh Girls Basketball Falls to Garden City 62-38

The girls basketball team ended their regular season schedule losing to a tough Garden City team Monday night 62-38.

The Lady Warriors turned the ball over early and were not able to match the hot shooting of the Lady Trojans. Wantagh was not able to outscore Garden City until the fourth quarter and by than the outcome had already been decided.

Turning Point: Senior captains Paula Schmidt and April Iannetta helped the Warrior's stay close in the first quarter. Both shot the ball well but the Lady Trojans ended the quarter with a 17-9 lead. They scored 16 more in the second taking a a 33-19 lead into halftime.

Heroes: Iannetta had 12 points to lead the Lady Warriors. Schmidt had eight points and Sophomore Demi Valenti added five.

Quotable: "They were hot from the field tonight," said Wantagh head coach Stan Bujacich of Garden City. "They were hitting their shots and getting rebounds despite the fact that we played pretty good defense."

Bottom Line: The Lady Warriors could not keep up with the hot shooting touch of Garden City's Barbara Sullivan who had a career high 30 points in the game. Everytime Wantagh would get a basket Garden City would come back down the court and score. They also had a tough time rebounding getting edged out by Garden City's bigger guards.

"We need to get our stuff together by the start of playoffs," said Bujacich. "It's about surviving and advancing so we need to come together strong as a team."
