Wantagh Girls Basketball Wins at Jericho
Lady Warriors improve to 7-2 in conference play with 74-55 road victory Friday night.
The girls basketball team continued its hot play in Conference A-1 with a 74-55 win at Jericho Friday night. The road win moves the Lady Warriors to 7-2 in Conference A- and 10-4 overall.
Hero- Erin Pugh of Wantagh led the way for the Warriors on Friday night. Pugh poured in 20 points, hitting timely threes and leading the fast break. She provided a good jolt for her team when they needed it most. She also had 5 steals on the day. Teammate April Ianetta also had a solid game, scoring 16 points. She was Pugh’s running mate on the fast break and helped Wantagh build a solid lead in the third quarter.
Turning Point- Wantagh jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter outscoring Jericho 26-4. However, Jericho made a huge turn around in the second quarter by outscoring Wantagh 22-8. With Jericho storming back, Wantagh needed to make a statement in the third quarter. Pugh made sure her team wasn’t going to relinquish their lead. She hit two three pointers and had two steals in the quarter. Her teammates rallied around her good play and the Lady Warriors held on to win by 19 points.
Quote- Wantagh head coach Stan Bujacich said after the win, “We came out strong and almost let them back in. We had to buckle down and luckily we held on for the win tonight.”
Bottom Line- With the season coming towards the end, each team is vying for the conference championship. The Lady Warriors took a step in that direction Friday night and are now in second place in the conference behind Division, who have an 8-1conference record. Wantagh will have to buckle down in a tough division in order to win this conference. They will next be in action at home against New Hyde Park on Tuesday starting at 4:30 p.m.
