Wantagh School District Still Does 'Not Want To Give Up' Warrior Name
Indigenous names, mascots and imagery must be removed from high schools within two years.

WANTAGH, NY — The Wantagh School District is holding firm about the New York State Education Department's ban on any indigenous names, mascots and imagery.
The district initially wrote an open letter that they intend to keep the Warrior nickname, but find a new logo in coordination with the community.
Board of Education members wrote a new statement that points out the use of Warrior name "would not be permissible under the new regulations," they said. "Contrary to this, it remains our belief that the Warrior nickname as it stands alone and with new imagery would not be in violation of the new regulation as it is written and can be successfully rebranded."

The Board said the school and the community are strongly identified with the name "and we do not want to give that up."
The Wantagh School District is planning to address this with counsel for its "intended application."
