WATCH: 'Overwhelming' Getting Kidney From Neighbor
Joe Boyce started a website in search of a live donor before his neighbor Liz Haines sacrificed her kidney.

WANTAGH, NY — Joe Boyce started a website in March as his kidney functions worsened. He would need dialysis if a live donor couldn't be found.
The Wantagh native would expand the reach nationally for his needed organ. But the life-saving kidney came from his neighbor Liz Haines.
"My husband and I both considered getting tested. He was quickly eliminated due to his blood type, but I was considered someone to continue on in the process," Haines said on Patch AM.

Although interested, Haines was not initially in the mindset for having kidney surgery.
Boyce saw little reluctance from his longtime neighbor.

"She was very non-wavering and she actually had the date all set out," Boyce told Patch AM. "So it was overwhelming."
When Haines confirmed she would donate a kidney, Boyce asked if she was sure.
"Then I told her, I wish I didn't know her," Boyce said. "We knew the family. So, I didn't want anything to happen to her because we knew her."
Haines is proud of what she did but wasn't expecting so much attention for it.
"I hope that it just shows others that you can really pitch in and help somebody else out in need," she said.
