Woman Charged With Abuse After Putting Rubber Bands On Dog: DA

Officials say she turned her dog over to an animal shelter with rubber bands tightly wrapped around it.

A woman from Uniondale was arrested Tuesday after prosecutors say she neglected and abused her dog. Megan Ewers, 25, was arraigned and charged with torturing or injuring animals and failure to provide sustenance.

According to Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, on Aug. 2, 2017, Ewers surrendered her dog, a seven-month-old male Chihuahua/Terrier/Pit Bull mix named Ace, to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh. During the intake exam of the dog, the veterinarian noticed it had rubber bands tightly wound around its testicles, which the doctor determined to be the cause of an infection. The veterinarian estimated the rubber bands had to have been in place for at least one to two weeks judging by the extent of the dog's injuries. Ace later had corrective surgery, recovered and was adopted.

“This defenseless animal experienced unimaginable pain and suffering while allegedly in the custody of his owner,” Singas said. “Fortunately, Ace has recovered and is now in a safe and loving home.”
