Black History Comes Alive In Harlem With Immersive Concert Experience

Event Details
HARLEM, NY — This Black History Month, history will step off the page and into the room as BLACK HISTORY COMES ALIVE™: A Masterpiece Concert in Living History brings music, storytelling, and cultural tribute together in a unique community experience.
Produced by New York African Chorus Ensemble, Inc., the event reimagines the traditional concert format by inviting both performers and audience members to actively participate in honoring Black history. Through song, movement, and spoken word, the program highlights Black historical figures, cultural movements, ancestral heritage, and enduring themes of resilience, creativity, and excellence.
Unlike a typical performance, BLACK HISTORY COMES ALIVE™ encourages attendees to arrive in Cultural Tribute Attire — a dress that respectfully honors Black icons, eras, or symbolic themes such as freedom, faith, peace, and legacy. The result is a shared space that feels less like an auditorium and more like a living museum, where history is visible, embodied, and celebrated.
“This event is about remembrance with intention,” said Joyce Adewumi, the concept originator and producer. “By inviting the community to show up as history, we create a powerful intergenerational moment where stories are not only told, but truly seen and felt.”
The concert is designed to be welcoming to families, elders, faith communities, and young people, with no requirement for elaborate costumes. Simple, meaningful attire and personal interpretation are encouraged, and participation is optional.
In addition to the performances, the event will feature a curated group of vendors offering cultural goods, wellness products, fashion, food, and handcrafted items, creating an atmosphere that reflects the richness and diversity of Black culture.
BLACK HISTORY COMES ALIVE™ is part of New York African Chorus Ensemble’s ongoing mission to use the arts as a tool for education, community building, and cultural preservation.
