- Construction of the new Library in Inwood, "The Eliza" began Tuesday on anew development that will include affordable housing and a universal per-kindergarten school. A number of nonprofits joined city departments for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the future site of "The Eliza," according to a news release. The development at 4790 Broadway is named for Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, the wife of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. (Washington Heights-Inwood Patch)
- The NYPD is launching a community greeter program, as a way to make visits to the precinct more successful for those who need services. The position, which many new greeters started on Monday, is called Community Guide, and is meant to deepen the relationship between each precinct and its community. The mayor announced it in his daily press conference on Sept. 30.(amny)
- A group of New York City public school teachers asked the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday to block the city's vaccine mandate for school employees claiming it violates their due process and equal protection rights. "If permitted to take effect, the August 23 Order will force thousands of unvaccinated public-school employees to lose their jobs-while other municipal employees, including those who have significant contact with children, are allowed to opt-out of the vaccine mandate through weekly COVID-19 testing," the petition said. - United Airlines on Thursday trimmed the number of employees who are
facing termination for defying the company's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The Chicago-based carrier said only 320 U.S.-based staff are now not in compliance with its COVID-19 vaccination policy, marking a 46% drop in the past two days. Excluding those who have sought an exemption, United said 99.5% of U.S.-based employees now have been vaccinated against COVID-19.(metro) - A 15-year-old boy was busted for allegedly stabbing another student in the head in
a fight over a girl at a troubled Bronx high school — hours before the school was locked down for a shooting threat, police said Thursday. The suspect, whose name was not released because of his age, was arrested around 8 p.m. Wednesday and charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the NYPD.
