Here are the top stories today in Washington Heights-Inwood:
- A robbery took place in the middle of the day on Sept. 14, which makes things interesting for law enforcement who already have recently dealt with a handful of late night robberies in the Inwood community. Near 421 West 202nd Street, two men brandish a gun, ripped off a 26-year-old man's gold bracelet and jumped into a red Jeep at 3:30 p.m.. The NYPD is searching for help from the community with photos captured by surveillance cameras. (Washington Heights-Inwood Patch)
- A motorcyclist died Tuesday after rear-ending a disabled car on a Bronx highway, officials said. Joel Ramirez Payano, 34, was heading south on the Major Deegan Expressway near W. 233rd St. in Kingsbridge around 10:30 am. The motorcyclist slammed into the back of a 2007 Toyota Prius with a flat tire in the left lane. (YAHOO)
- This weekend, Representative Adriano Espaillat hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month program recognizing the significant impact of community leaders including non-profits, and elected officials of the Dominican diaspora in the United States. The special guest was the Honorable President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader. During this event, Rep. Espaillat presented President Abinader with a series of proposals aimed at further strengthening the relations between the United States and the Dominican Republic. (Harlem World Magazine)
- A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for New York City and parts of the Tri-State area through Friday morning. About 1-2 inches of rain could fall with localized heavier amounts possible. New York City Emergency Management has issued a travel advisory for this period. (abc7ny)
- New York City has a few hidden mews sprinkled throughout, one of which is Sylvan Terrace in Washington Heights. The one-block cobblestone stretch was originally the carriage drive for the adjacent Morris Jumel Mansion, and in the 1880s, 20 wooden row houses were constructed along it to serve as housing for working-class locals. A rare opportunity, the home at number 8 has just hit the market for $1,795,000.(6sqft)
