WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY—New York City Police say officers have arrested a registered sex offender in the attempted rape of a woman on a subway train in August.
Police arrested Sinke Zewge, 39, on Monday. Zewge faces charges of attempted rape, robbery, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and criminal obstruction of breathing. Police say he has no fixed address. According to state records, Zewge is a registered sex offender and served time in prison for an attempted rape in 2010.
Zewge is accused of approaching a woman on a northbound "C" train August 3, demanding her property, slamming her into the train car seats, and strangling her until she lost consciousness temporarily. He allegedly touched her and attempted to rape her, according to police. When the train entered the 168 Street-Broadway station, Zewge allegedly dragged the woman out of the train and ran out of the station.
