📰 News we're reading

1. Race Against Poverty raises critical funds for United Way of NNY (localsyr.com) — Downtown Watertown just hosted 31 two-person teams racing between 13 local businesses to raise money for United Way of Northern New York's anti-poverty programs. The annual Race Against Poverty both funds initiatives like ALICE and Getting Ahead and helps residents better understand the challenges neighbors face living on limited incomes.

2. Asbestos found in Watertown High School classroom; district closes four rooms (wwnytv.com) — Watertown High School has closed three classrooms and an office after asbestos was discovered in one room, with students and staff already relocated elsewhere in the building. District officials, union leaders, and state experts are treating the situation as an emergency so Watertown can secure state funding, complete mitigation work, and safely reopen the affected spaces.

3. Gas prices rise in Watertown area (informnny.com) — Drivers in the Watertown area are paying about $4.57 per gallon for gas after a two-cent jump, the largest increase in the region. With diesel and electricity costs also high across New York, residents are urged to plan routes carefully, avoid rush-hour traffic, and maintain proper tire pressure to stretch every tank further.

4. Planned Parenthood to close 2 locations (wwnytv.com) — Planned Parenthood of the North Country is closing its Ogdensburg and Lowville clinics to concentrate resources on its Canton and Watertown health centers, which will continue serving patients. Leaders say no staff will lose jobs and patients will be contacted with guidance on transferring care and scheduling future appointments.
