Greenwich Village Bar Gets Named 2nd Best In The World

While the second spot is an incredible achievement, the Lower Manhattan joint got dethroned from its prior No. 1 position on the list.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — Lower Manhattan's Dante was recently named the second-best bar in the world by the annual World's 50 Best Bars list.

The routinely celebrated watering hole in Greenwich Village actually lost a spot from last year's ranking, when it was named the best bar in the world.

In 2020, the top spot went to the Connaught Bar in London, England.

Here's what the rankings had to say about Dante:

"With more than a century of memories, Cafe Dante is an ode to New York hospitality past — but also its future," authors of the rankings wrote. "It's clean white tiles and Italian styling frame a buzzing all-day atmosphere — the sort of place that fits the times."

The World's 50 Best Bars team called The Garibaldi the "must-order" cocktail, which gets made with Campari and orange juice.

The bar is located at 79-81 MacDougal Street and also has a location in the West Village.

Dante opened under the name Cafe Dante in 1915 as an Italian bar and cafe. It changed ownership in 2015, and the joint has won several awards in the five years since.
