Greenwich Village Tour Celebrates 'Birthplace Of NYC Coffee'

This tour invites guests to drink their way through the history of coffee, from its discovery in Africa to where it was first served in NYC.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, MANHATTAN — A new tour from Untapped Cities will invite New Yorkers to drink their way through the history of coffee in the city.

The Greenwich Village Coffee Tour and Tasting, added to the organization's list of New York City experiences late last month, will let tour-goers visit some of the "hidden historical gems" for grabbing a cup of Joe in the neighborhood, which it credits as the birthplace of NYC coffee.

Those who sign up will also get the chance to learn about everything from the discovery of coffee in Africa to the sustainable farming movements surrounding the beverage from the past few years, organizers said.

"On this unique walking tour we will learn how New York and coffee go hand-in-hand both in cultural and economic development," Untapped writes. "In between sampling coffee at some of the retailers that popularized America's favorite beverage, you'll get a crash course in coffee history."

Some of that history will include the story of one of the most successful coffee entrepreneurs of the early 20th century, a woman who opened her first shop in Grand Central.

It will also include drinking a cappuccino from New York City's oldest cafe, discovering the cafe that became the unofficial birthplace of the off-Broadway theater movement and visiting New York City's first espresso machine.

By the end of the tour, attendees will have tried an espresso, a drip coffee, chocolate covered coffee beans and a cappuccino.
