Meryl Streep, Sting To Join Star-Studded Public Theater Benefit
Antonio Banderas, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Elvis Costello are just some of the other names that will attend the "We Are One" virtual event.
NEW YORK, NY — Even with its doors closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, New York City's iconic Public Theater isn't letting gala season go by without a star-studded celebration.
Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sting are just some of the names that have signed on to attend a virtual version of the theater's annual gala benefit.
The "We Are One Public" event will be streamed online at 8 p.m. June 1.

Modern Family and Broadway star Jesse Tyler Ferguson will host the fundraiser, which will include appearances or performances from more than 50 stars.
“It is a pretty impressive list,” Ferguson told the Associated Press. “I can’t believe I’m going to have a one-on-one conversations with these people. Some are friends, but I also have to prepare that I’m going to have a conversation with Sting — which is really mind-blowing.”

This year, the event will honor Audrey and Zygi Wilf and "Law & Order" actor Sam Waterston.
Other stars scheduled to make an appearance include Alicia Keys, Daniel Craig, Danielle Brooks, Glenn Close, Elvis Costello, Claire Danes, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Oh and Audra McDonald.
The online benefit comes after the Public Theater, like all New York City venues, was forced to cancel or postpone its in-person shows due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Manhattan theater is known for putting on popular Central Park summer show Shakespeare in the Park, which it had to cancel for the first time in 58 years last month.
"We Are One Public" will be streamed on The Public's website, YouTube, and Facebook.
Those who donate or RSVP in advance will be entered to win a $100 Seamless eGift Card.
