EEAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN — Democrats living in Manhattan's 27th state senate district — which stretches from the Village to the Upper West Side — will head to the polls on June 23 to cast their ballot in this year's primary race.

On the ballot will be incumbent state Sen. Brad Hoylman, who has held the seat since 2013, and Elizabeth Glass, a first-time challenger from the East Village.

The June election will be the first time Hoylman has faced a primary challenger since 2012, when he first ran for the 27th District after Sen. Thomas Duane retired.

Glass, a 51-year-old mother of four, is an eighth-generation New Yorker and teaches English as a second language to adults. Concern about the COVID-19 vaccine and a bill sponsored by Hoylman related to the 2019 measles outbreak prompted her to run, Glass said.

Manhattan's 27th District encompasses parts of Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Hell's Kitchen, Columbus Circle, Times Square, the Upper West Side, the East Village, Midtown East, and the Lower East Side.

Why are you seeking elective office?

The NYSBA wants to make the COVID-19 Vaccine mandatory in NY. My opponent is the reason you cannot refuse a vaccine (S2994).

The single most pressing issue facing our nation/state/community is _______, and this is what I intend to do about it.

Our leaders have completely failed us; NYC has plunged into anarchy, in large part because our Governor was granted dictatorial-level powers via S7919. I have been advocating for A10449 which would Cuomo's limitless authority.

What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

I support medical freedom & health choice, in-school education, and am opposed to contact tracing; my opponent supports forced vaccination, ending in-school education (Reimagine NY Education), and contact tracing.

If you are a challenger, in what way has the current board or officeholder failed the community (or district or constituency)

My opponent is with Gov. Cuomo on Reimagine Education (ending in-school education), Forced COVID-19 vaccination, and Contact Tracing; he also supports the privatization of NYCHA and is partially-responsible for the closing of St. Vincent's Hospital.

Describe the other issues that define your campaign platform

NYC has plunged into anarchy; our leaders have failed us. I promise to work with other freedom-loving reps in order to heal our beloved state.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

As evidenced by the bio on my web page, I have survived a lot of challenges: a near-death car accident, raising four children alone, yet maintaining a career. I am dedicated, competent, and care deeply about my fellow New Yorkers.

The best advice ever shared with me was:

Never quit

What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I believe the US Constitution, and am dedicated to helping New Yorkers recover and heal››. Thank you.
