WEST VILLAGE, NY — A woman had to fight off a man who broke into her West Village apartment while she was sleeping and tried to sexually assault her, according to police.

The frightening attack took place at 12:35 a.m. on Friday near West 4th Street and 8th Avenue, police said.

The 31-year-old woman told police she woke up to find a man standing in her bedroom doorway demanding money and sex.

She handed over some money to the man, but when the attacker tried to sexually assault her, she fought back and "pushed him out of her residence," according to police.

The man ran away with $600 and the woman bruised her arm in the struggle, police said.

There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
