NYS Assembly candidate and Democratic State Committeeman Ben Yee announced a landmark resolution to the New York State Democratic Committee that would finally implement an independent ethics process to protect victims of sexual violence, harassment, and discrimination. The move comes as a wave of sexual assault and harassment allegations has rocked Congress over the last month, underscoring the lethal consequences of political organizations that lack independent oversight.

Currently, the State Party lacks a dedicated, independent path for reporting sexual misconduct. By moving the ethics process away from party leadership, this reform:

1) Removes the Conflict of Interest: Survivors will no longer be forced to report harassment to an ethics committee hand-picked by the very leaders who may be protecting the accused.

2) Ensures Professional Adjudication: Cases of discrimination and assault will be handled by an independent arbiter trained in these sensitive matters, rather than by political appointees.

3) Ends the "Chilling Effect": Establishing a process outside the political power structure ensures that reporting misconduct doesn't result in professional retaliation.

Yee’s fight for these safeguards began years ago during the administration of former Governor Andrew Cuomo. When Yee first presented these reforms to party leadership, he was met with dismissive hostility. Top officials accused Yee of pushing for independent oversight simply because he "hated the governor." That interaction occurred over a year before multiple women publicly accused Governor Cuomo of sexual assault and harassment, leading to his resignation. Today’s announcement is a direct response to a party infrastructure that continues to prioritize political loyalty over member safety.

"For years, leadership has failed to act on an independent ethics process. The Democratic Party's silence since the Cuomo scandal has been deafening," said Ben Yee. "With new allegations surfacing in Congress every week, we can no longer pretend this is a problem that will go away if we ignore it. If we don’t build an independent shield for survivors now, we are complicit in the next scandal. On Denim Day, we must stop talking about values and start institutionalizing them."
