Beaches West Of Shinnecock Canal Reopen After Shark Sighting

The beaches were reopened west of the Shinnecock Canal after shark sightings Tuesday, police say.

WESTHAMPTON, NY — One day after shark sightings, all Southampton Town beaches west of the Shinnecock Canal were opened to swimming Wednesday, police said.

Sharks were reportedly feeding on bunker off Pikes Beach in Westhampton Tuesday, Southampton Town Police said.

According to police, the sharks were seen about 200 to 300 yards off Pikes Beach.

The beach was closed to swimming Tuesday, police said.

The news follows multiple reports of 26 shark sightings in Nassau this summer; Smith Point County Park in Shirley was also closed to swimming on Monday after shark sightings.
