Beloved Nurse, EMT, 87, Honored As Community Hero

"Ann is a true example of a community hero."

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — A beloved longtime nurse and EMT was honored recently for her lifetime of contributions to the Westhampton Beach community.

Ann Nowak, 87, was honored as the Westhampton Free Library’s fifth community hero during a ceremony at the library’s regular board meeting on June 13. The 50-year Westhampton Beach resident was selected for the honor by the library’s circulation department.

“Ann is a true example of a community hero,” said Library Director Danielle Waskiewicz. “We are thrilled to honor her.”

Nowak worked for 15 years as a nurse at Westhampton Beach Elementary School, while also raising her children and volunteering as an EMT with the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance Association.

Ever community minded, she also volunteered at Peconic Bay Medical Center and worked at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Now retired, she spends her time visiting the library and reading British mysteries. She also enjoys crafts and knitting — this winter, she knitted scarves for every library employee, a release said.

“She is one of our most valued patrons,” said Jan Camarada, a member of the library’s circulation department.

"The library’s yearlong Community Hero recognition program pays tribute to community members who embody the spirit of giving," the release said.

The honorees are celebrated at the library board’s monthly meetings.
