Blue-Green Algae Found in East End Pond

The algae continues to persist in a total of eight East End ponds and lakes.

Cyanobacteria or blue-green algae has been found at Georgica Pond in East Hampton, researchers from Stony Brook University confirmed on Tuesday.

Currently, the following locations on the East End continue to have blue-green algae:

  • Georgica Pond in East Hampton
  • McKay Lake in Calverton
  • Fort Pond in Montauk
  • Kellis Pond in Bridgehampton
  • Wainscott Pond in Wainscott
  • Agawam Lake in Southampton
  • Mill Pond in Southampton
  • Maratooka Lake in Mattituck

Health officials ask residents not to use, swim or wade in these waters and to keep pets and children away from the area.

Contact with waters that appear scummy or discolored should be avoided. If contact does occur, rinse off with clean water immediately.

Officials advise to seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms occur after contact: nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; skin, eye or throat irritation; or allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.
