Community Teams Up to Prevent Drownings in Shinnecock Canal

The "Hands Across the Water" event takes place on September 22 at Oaklands.

HAMPTON BAYS, NY — Friends and neighbors are teaming up to prevent tragedy in the Shinnecock Canal.

The Southampton Rotary and The Hampton Bays Rotary Clubs are joining forces to install safety stations along the Shinnecock Canal.

An event, "Hands Across the Water", will be held on September 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Oaklands in Hampton Bays; the event will include a raffle.

Drownings, both organizations said, have occurred in the canal.

To prevent future tragedies, the safety stations that will be strategically placed on the east and west sides of the canal. A life preserver and alarm at each of the 20 stations will be included with the safety stations, which will be installed approximately 200 feet apart along the canal.
