COVID Derails Fundraiser Honoring Westhampton Grad Lost Too Soon

But just because the actual fundraiser isn't going to take place, donations can still be made to help local families in need. Here's how.

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY — In the summer like no other, with countless plans waylaid by the coronavirus, a fundraiser organized every year in memory of Westhampton Beach High School graduate Cory Hubbard, lost far too soon, has been derailed.

Cory died in 2014 when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while away at college.

In the years since their family's unspeakable loss, the Ralph and Holly Hubbard have created The Live Your Cor Foundation, which provides funds for local families facing adversity.

"Regrettably, we have decided not to have our annual fundraiser this year. We just don't want to put anyone at risk or make anyone uncomfortable. We are sad because it limits our ability to help local families in need. We are also sad because we won't get to spend time with the amazing group of friends and family that Cory has brought together at our events.

"We are so very thankful for all of the support you have given us over the years. Because of your generosity, we have been able to help many families in Cory's memory. Under the current situation, more families are in need than ever. We will continue to do whatever we can with or limited resources. We urge you all to support other local organizations that have emerged this year," he wrote.

Despite the social distancing protocols in place, there are still ways to help: If you would like to donate to "Live Your Cor" or purchase clothing, click here and contact the Hubbards using the information given. Checks can also be sent, made out to "Live Your Cor" and mailed to 17 Bridle Path, Westhampton Beach,NY 11978.

"We hope to see you in 2021. Best wishes from the Hubbard Family and Live Your Cor!" the message said.

Cory, known for his adventurous spirit, his kind heart and easy laughter, died tragically when, while a student at the University of Maryland, he was struck by the hit-and-run driver.

In the years since his death, Cory's parents, as well as his brother Kyle, have kept his bright light alive through acts of kindness.

"Through your generosity, we have been able to help families facing personal loss, disease, accidents, and other challenges," the Hubbards have said.

Friends have traveled the world and taken photos with "Live Your Cor" shirts and stickers, keeping Cory's love of adventure and travel alive and his memories close.

Cory left a long legacy at Westhampton Beach High School: The fitness room has a wall dedicated to Cory. "It will hopefully inspire young athletes to strive for leadership, character and maintain a team-first attitude," Ralph Hubbard said.

The years since Cory's death have not been easy: His loss bring tears to his friends and family but the memories of his bright smile and contagious laugh always bring smiles of joy.

"There is a saying in the Compassionate Friends that says, 'If you say my child's name it may bring a tear to my eye, but if you don't mention them it breaks my heart,'" Ralph said. "That sums up what we feel about the scholarships and dedications created in Cory's memory. We will never get over our loss but we are blessed that our friends and family are comfortable remembering him and bring him up often."
